Why it matters
Strands you without the basic skill
Faster than any roadside callout
Roadside safety depends on doing it right
Requires only the kit in your trunk

Your Kit

  • Carry a spare tire and jack
  • Pack a lug wrench you can grip
  • Keep a wheel chock or rock
  • Stash gloves to save your hands

Before You Start

  • Park on flat, level ground
  • Switch on the hazard lights
  • Set the parking brake firmly
  • Move passengers to the safe side

Break It Loose

  • Loosen each lug nut one turn
  • Turn counterclockwise with the wrench
  • Do this before lifting the car
  • Leave the nuts in place for now

Lift And Strip

  • Place jack under the marked point
  • Raise until the flat clears ground
  • Remove all lug nuts safely
  • Pull the flat straight off the hub

Mount The Spare

  • Align the spare with the hub holes
  • Push it flush against the hub
  • Thread lug nuts on by hand
  • Tighten in a star pattern

Lower And Lock

  • Lower the car until weight settles
  • Remove the jack carefully
  • Torque lug nuts in a star pattern
  • Double-check every nut is snug

Stow And Go

  • Store the flat tire securely
  • Return the jack to its place
  • Pack away all your tools
  • Confirm the wheel sits firm
